Excitement, drama, confusion reign at First Flight Middle School softball game

March 11 – Immediately following the First Flight Middle School baseball game I walked the 20 feet to the Lady Seahawks softball game against Moyock. I could see their scoreboard from the baseball field and I had a sense that they were down, often by a lot of runs, through most of the game.

I quickly set up to shoot at the top of the 6th inning. Moyock went down quickly and when First Flight came to bat, things got really exciting. First, the Moyock coach thought that a First Flight girl batted out of turn. Many, many fans tried to help the umpires work things out but they declined – the situation was finally resolved. First Flight then mounted a great comeback effort, including an inside-the-park home run, but they were down by 2 runs at the end of 6.

The umpire called – “end of game due to time limited.” Apparently games can only last 2.5 hours. This game started at 5:00 PM local time. It was now 7:01 PM.

Everyone on the field stated to walk off, but the umpires had to walk through a gate where several local moms were standing. The moms queried the home plate umpires to why the game had been stopped. The umpire then realized that if it is now 7:01 and the game started at 5:00 – hmmmmmm, “Everyone, back on the field!!!!”

The Lady Seahawks would go three-up, three-down in the bottom of the 7th so the game ended with Moyock winning 15-13. Or so I think……
