April 18 – UPDATE to “A picture is worth a 1,000 words.’
Since I have a little time on my hand I decided to play detective. So after almost 13 years, I decided to try and track down the player in this photo and offer the photo to him, assuming that it would have some special meaning to him and his family.
The player was #32, pitcher Scott Grogen. Apparently there was indeed a lot of drama associated with the game. It was the 2nd largest crowd in CWS history. After dropping their first game to Arizona State 5-4, UC Irvine had won their last game against in-state rivals Cal State Fullerton 8-7 in 13 innings. Losing meant you pack your bags and go home but the Anteaters were on a roll.
Grogen got the win after a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th. He pitched two scoreless innings for the Anteaters in the 9th and 10th innings.
Although I haven’t been able to confirm the older gentleman in the photo, the photo now means even more to me. I truly hope that I can connect with Mr. Grogen one day.
If you get a chance check out what happened to Scott Grogen following the 2007 College World Series.
