May 5 – Words to live by.
What can I say, I like Clint Eastwood movies. Although not one of his blockbusters, I really enjoyed Heartbreak Ridge mainly because there are a lot of great quotes to be had. I use several from the movie on a fairly regular basis.
Eastwood plays “Gunny Highway” who is assigned to a barracks occupied by a ragtag group of… well, let’s just say, misfits. It’s Gunny’s job turn them into true Marines.
So there I was, at the 2006 College World Series. I was psyched because we scored some sweet seats down the first base line. This would give me a new perspective and opportunity to get some new shots. Well, when I got to my seat the photo above shows my primary view. I was NOT a happy camper! I was so very tempted to talk to an usher and argue that I was sold a seat with an obstructed view!!!
But that’s when I heard Gunny Highway’s voice in my head “You’re [a photographer] (Marines) now. You adapt. You overcome. You improvise.” And that’s what I did. I dodged and weaved so much to get the shots that I felt like Muhammad Ali battling Joe Frazier. Fortunately the match didn’t go the full 9 innings – the woman in front of me left very early. Good thing too. I was getting ready to “sting like a bee.”
So remember, during these crazy times ya gotta: adapt, overcome, improvise.
And also be safe.
