June 14 – A history lesson.
OK boys and girls, today’s history lesson is about an incredible sports show that your humble narrator, and millions of other people, came to watch and love – ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Yes, sport’s fans, this was THE sports show long before ESPN even existed.
The show had a dramatic opening with a catchphrase that’s even around today – “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” I strongly encourage you to check out what it was like on youtube.
As a sports photographer I’ve lived these two emotions countless times as I’ve documented through the lens the thrill of a team’s victory and heart-rendering agony of defeat.
It’s very hard for me to divorce myself from feeling both emotions, especially after a baseball tournament or series. As I’ve shared in several posts before, I often get to “know” the young athletes as I shoot them on the field and outside the lines. Usually, there’s a lot of banter and radiating emotions. Some of these pics will always bring back a flood of emotion – the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Man I miss those days watching that show – how about you?
Until next post, be safe, be kind.
