May 8: Passing it on…
When I’m at the park before a game I’m always looking for something that reveals what baseball means to me. I was lucky enough to capture the moment in this photo. A dad teaching his son how to throw a baseball. I felt connected to the moment and thought about a time when I did the same with my son.
But there’s more to the story. The dad is Landon Powell, coach of the North Greenville team and a former big leaguer with the Oakland A’s. Coach Powell was a catcher in the bigs and even caught Dallas Braden’s perfect game. I’ve been to the Oakland A’s park many times and took my son there to see some games.
But the connection continues. Coach Powell played college ball for the University of South Carolina and was their catcher during the NCAA College World Series in 2002 and 2003. Guess who was at the CWS in 2002 and 2003 – yup, I was. And I took a lot of photos from the stands of Landon Powell the player.
The small world of baseball.
Until next post be safe, be kind, and pass along some knowledge of something you love to the kids.
